FSSAI Registration / License

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Association of India) is a body established in 2008, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The FSSAI is a consolidating law that relates to food safety and regulation in India for placing science-based standards for articles of food and also regulate their manufacture, distribution, storage, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
As per the Act, no person shall commence or carry on any food business except under FSSAI license or FSSAI registration. FSSAI License is a location-specific and is also term bound. FSSAI facilitates trade, without compromising the safety concerns of the people and helps to remove various regulations on receiving approvals.

Categories of FSSAI Registration/ Licence

Based on Annual Turnover, a food business operator has to apply for either the Basic Registration, State License or Central License.

  • FSSAI Registration

Every Petty Food Business Operator including petty retailer, hawker, itinerant vendor, juice stall, sweets shops or a temporary stallholder, who manufactures or sell any article of food with an annual turnover not exceeding Rs 12 lakhs can obtain FSSAI Registration by submitting an application. On submission of application, the registration should be provided, or application rejected in writing within seven days of receipt of an application by the authority.

  • FSSAI State license

Any person that does not classify as a petty food business operator is required to obtain a FSSAI license for operating a food business in India. The State FSSAI License is for the Food Business Operator who has a medium-size business and foresee an annual turnover of more than Rs 12 Lac or up to Rs 20 crores. The state licence can be further upgraded to a central licence depends on business sale productivity.

  • FSSAI Central License

Central License is required for all the large food business operator involved in the manufacturing, storage, distribution, transportation or retailing of food products and foresees an annual turnover more than Rs.20 crore. Central License is also required in cases you need to supply the food product at the Government offices or import/export food products even if the turnover is less then 20 crore.

  • Photo of Applicant
  • Identity Proof of applicant (Voter ID Card, PAN Card, Driving License, Passport, Aadhar Card)

Documents for State/ Central Food License

  • Blueprint/layout plan of the unit showing the dimensions in meters/square meters and operation-wise area allocation
  • List of Directors/partners / Members in case of society /Trust with full address and contact detail
  • Name and list of equipment’s and machinery along with the number, installed capacity and horsepower used (mandatory of manufacturing and Processing unit only)
  • A photo ID and address proof issued by Government authority of Partner/ Director(s) / Authorised Signatory/ Proprietor
  • List of Food Category desired to be manufactured (Only in Case of Manufacturing Unit)
  • Proof of possession of premises. (Sale deed/ Rent agreement/ Electricity bill, etc.)
  • Partnership Deed/ Self Declaration For Proprietorship/ MOA, AOA and Certificate of incorporation
  • Food Safety Management System plan or certificate if any
  • A duly signed copy of GST registration
